Founder’s story

Clare Egan (she/her) is a survivor of sexual violence and the founder of Beyond Survival.

She works with the with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre both as a phone counsellor on the helpline and accompanying people who’ve recently been sexually assaulted in the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit.

Her journalism has appeared in The Huffington Post, The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, The Irish Examiner, TheJournal.ie, Image Magazine, Púca, Scoop Magazine, Rogue, Longreads, GCN, and others. She won a Simon Cumbers Media Fund award to report on human rights abuses in Malawian prisons. She has written an as-yet-unpublished novel, and is working on her first non-fiction book. 

 

Clare has almost fifteen years’ experience in the non-profit sector, specialising in communications. She began her career as an unpaid volunteer, and worked her way up to a senior management position by the age of 28. She worked on a national campaign to Repeal the Eighth and raised a lot of money for children through her work with UNICEF. 

She has a Bachelor of Arts in English, History and Politics from NUI, Maynooth and a Masters degree in Human Rights from University College Dublin. She is a proud alumnus of the Washington Ireland Program, and spent a summer interning in the US Senate. She has lived and worked internationally in Sub-Saharan Africa, India and the US. 

Clare lives in Dublin with her partner and pets. When she’s not working, she loves to cook, travel and read.
